Autonomous Transportation: Smart Cars - Friends of Israel Sci-Tech Schools

Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary studies, combining aspects of science, modern technology, engineering, artistic design, mathematics and ethics.

Autonomous transportation is one of the technological fields being extensively developed worldwide. Autonomous cars are considered the highest level of independent robots, employing fast-movement abilities, a navigation system, the ability to detect and respond to dangers and hazards, real-time decision making, and a “digital conscience”.

Autonomous transportation involves capabilities and a technological-engineering intelligence that meet the following conditions:

  • Vehicles that drive passengers in a way that is safe for both passengers and the environment.
  • Vehicles that identify their surroundings, and can detect and cope with real-time hazards along the road.
  • Vehicles that identify their location, as part of the planned route as well as on the road/lane itself.

The autonomous transportation field must inherently address issues of various, intertwining aspects of science and technology, engineering and design, and incorporate consideration of ethical issues as early as the initial planning stage. Thus, the field of autonomous transportation serves as a great way to organically and naturally study multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary studies, combining aspects of science, modern technology, engineering, artistic design, mathematics and ethics, employing the iSTEAM approach. This program is inherently suitable for curiosity-based and research-based teaching, such as IBL (Interest-Based Learning) and PBL (Project-Based Learning), and it offers a wide variety of learning experiences and experimentation, using simulations, animations, experiments, and projects.

The learning involves multidisciplinary subjects and a variety of skills: engineering planning, algorithms, robotic systems, technological entrepreneurship, innovation, design and aesthetics, the financial aspects, and includes fundamental ethical and legal issues. Autonomous transportation is an inspiring and motivational platform that will provide students with a relevant and meaningful learning experience of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary topics, that are undoubtedly highly interesting and at the forefront of technology and science. The curricula are currently in the initial development and implementation stages.
